Arrival and transfer to Zanzibar, Stone Town, overnight at Serena Inn (L*) – Tembo Hotel (B*) – Grand Palace Hotel (BP*).

DAY 02: STONE TOWN TOUR

It may not have a particularly romantic name, but Stone Town is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, little changed in the last 200 years. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings. This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the brass-studded, carved, wooden doors – there are more than 500 different examples of this handiwork. You can spend many idle hours and days just wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways. Stone Town was recently and deservedly declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Most of the houses that can be seen today were built in the 19th century when Zanzibar was one of the most important trading centres in the Indian Ocean region. The coralline rock of Zanzibar was a good building material, but it is also easily eroded. This is evident by the large number of houses that are in a bad state of repair. Several buildings have already been renovated and the Stone Town Conservation Authority has been established to co-ordinate the restoration of the town to its original magnificence. As a result of sensible policy, nearly all of the major hotels built in Stone Town are housed in renovated buildings. Dinner and overnight at overnight at Serena Inn (L*) – Tembo Hotel (B*) – Grand Palace Hotel (BP*), Stone Town.

DAY 03: PRISON ISLAND AND SANDBANK PICNIC

We board the Dhow at the Harbour around 9am and then set sail towards Prison Island, to see the remains of the Prison built to condemn Zanzibar citizens to isolation and watch the giant Tortoises shuffle through the trees, with a guide and teacher to see the stunning array of coloured corals and tropical fish of the Islands. Then hop back onboard and let us sail you away to a sand bank where brilliant birdlife exists. A seemingly uninhabited and quiet bank in the ocean suddenly comes to life with millions of birds flying overhead and ghost crabs scurrying across the golden sands. After lunch relax on the sandbank and listen to stories from our crew about sailing the seven seas. We will slowly sail back to Stone Town after soaking up the sun and return back to the Harbour by 4pm, relaxed and fall more in love with Zanzibar than you thought imaginable. Dinner and overnight at Serena Inn (L*) – Tembo Hotel (B*) – Grand Palace Hotel (BP*), Stone Town.

DAY 04: SPICE TOUR AND SUNSET CRUISE

The Spice Tour can last half a day to a full day. Visits to the spice plantations will dazzle your senses with fresh spices. The excursion takes the visitor through plantations, private gardens, and forests. On the way visitors can stop at the old Sultan Rest House to view the Persian Baths built in 1850 by Seyyid Said bin Sultan (1st. Sultan of Zanzibar) for his wife Princess Shehzard. A unique opportunity to visit the local farms and talk to farmers who will show you the traditional spices and fruits of Zanzibar. Optional visits include: the Maruhubi Palace Ruins, the Persian Baths at Kidichi and Kizimbani. Depending on the season you may taste, see and smell up to 50 different Fruits, Spices and Plants on the Island. A Spice Tour is done in the western and central parts of the Island, where an abundance of Vegetation exists. In the evening enjoy a romantic sunset cruise from stone town, retake the journey of Princess Sayyida in a traditional Arabian dhow. Set forth from Stone town and sail along shores of this historic coast while the sun sinks into the ocean painting the town with it’s pastel colours. The crew will ply you with tales and wine, while you soak up the ambiance once enjoyed by Arabian Royalty. Enjoy Stone town without the hustle, bustle, noise and heat on the traditional Dhow.
